First define what “real moonstone” means

“Fake” is too broad: separate imitation, synthetic material and treatment

Why color is a screening clue, not a verdict

Bottom line: how to tell if moonstone is real
The strongest answer is not one trick. Confirm what moonstone materially is, inspect the piece non-destructively, understand its common treatments and imitations, and escalate to gemological testing when the claim is valuable enough to justify it. A trustworthy decision is built from converging evidence. Temperature-to-touch, “perfect” color, price and metaphysical feeling are weak evidence on their own.
Photo-based checks before buying moonstone online
Before buying moonstone online, prioritize neutral-light photographs and ask whether the images show the exact piece or a representative grade. The effect comes from microscopic feldspar structures interacting with light. This moving optical behavior is more informative than a static blue coating or a single bright photograph, but it still does not by itself identify every feldspar variety or treatment.
When inspecting a cabochon, rotate it slowly under one small light source. Observe whether the sheen travels across the dome, where it is strongest, and whether it appears beneath the surface rather than as a fixed iridescent film. Cut orientation strongly affects the display, so a genuine but poorly oriented moonstone may show weaker adularescence than a well-cut piece.
“Rainbow moonstone” and opalite are two different naming problems
Rainbow moonstone is a widely used trade name for transparent labradorite, a related feldspar that can show multicolored labradorescence. It is a natural gemstone material, but it is not the same traditional feldspar composition described for classic moonstone. An accurate seller should be able to explain the trade name rather than treating every flashy feldspar as identical.
Opalite, by contrast, is commonly manufactured glass sold for an opalescent blue-orange glow. It can be attractive, but it should not be represented as natural moonstone. Round gas bubbles, highly uniform body appearance and a glow that behaves like glass rather than a directional feldspar sheen can raise suspicion, yet definitive identification may still require gemological testing.
Cleavage changes how you test and wear moonstone
Moonstone is around Mohs 6–6.5 and has cleavage. That combination makes impact and scratch experiments especially poor authenticity tests on finished jewelry. A genuine stone can chip or break along cleavage directions even though it is harder than many imitation materials. Protect rings and bracelets from hard knocks, and store pieces so harder gems do not repeatedly rub the surface.
Some moonstone may be fracture-filled or impregnated. Treatments can alter apparent transparency or durability and may require professional detection. If value depends on untreated natural moonstone, ask for a report that addresses the relevant question. A seller card that simply says “real crystal” does not establish feldspar species, treatment status or the distinction between moonstone and labradorite.
Moonstone conclusion: identify the optical effect and the feldspar claim
Start by observing whether the sheen moves with the viewing angle in a way consistent with adularescence. Then ask what material the seller is naming: traditional moonstone, rainbow moonstone/labradorite, another feldspar or manufactured glass. A convincing flash does not answer every one of those questions.
Because moonstone has cleavage and moderate hardness, preserve the piece during verification. Avoid scratch and impact tests, document the seller’s naming and treatment claims, and use gemological testing for valuable material. Accurate trade naming is part of authenticity, not a technicality.
One final warning about flash photographs
A single photograph can exaggerate moonstone’s optical effect because the camera, light source and stone are aligned for maximum sheen. Ask for a short angle sequence or multiple photographs if the display is central to value. Genuine adularescence is directional, so the stone may look quieter in ordinary room light without being inauthentic.
Decision point: for moonstone, observe the moving sheen, confirm the feldspar naming, and keep rainbow-moonstone trade terminology separate from opalite glass. If price depends on precise material or treatment status, use gemological evidence.
Test the optical claim by movement, not by a single hero image
Moonstone is sold for an optical effect, so the evidence should show that effect behaving naturally as viewing geometry changes. Ask for a short video or several angles under one ordinary light source. A band or cloud of sheen that appears, strengthens and fades as the stone moves is more informative than one perfectly aligned photograph. This still does not prove every naming or treatment claim, but it gives better evidence than a static “flash” shot.
Then separate optics from nomenclature. Traditional moonstone and material sold as rainbow moonstone can belong to different feldspar compositions, while opalite is manufactured glass.
