Care starts with the material, not the ritual
Crystal care has two different meanings that are often mixed together. The first is physical care: keeping a mineral, bead, carving, metal fitting or cord clean and avoiding damage. The second is spiritual care: cleansing or charging rituals used in contemporary crystal practice. Physical care can be evaluated through material properties such as hardness, cleavage, porosity, chemical sensitivity, treatments and construction. Spiritual cleansing and charging are matters of belief and personal practice; they should not be described as scientifically proven changes to a stone.
A useful default is conservative. If you do not know exactly what a stone is, how it was treated or what hardware is attached, avoid soaking it, avoid salt, avoid strong chemicals and avoid long periods of direct sunlight. Dust it with a soft dry cloth, then use a slightly damp cloth only if the material is known to tolerate moisture. Before buying or caring for an unfamiliar piece, check how the seller documents crystal authenticity and the underlying sourcing and materials; colour, weight or a marketing label alone cannot establish identity.
Different forms also need different handling. A polished palm stone has no elastic or metal to protect, while a bracelet may combine drilled beads, elastic, spacers and coatings. A cluster can have fragile points that catch on fabric. A sphere can roll. A tall tower can chip if it falls. Use a care-risk matrix before choosing a cleaning method
A stronger way to care for crystals is to assess several risks together instead of asking only, “Is this stone hard?” Mohs hardness describes resistance to scratching; it does not tell you whether a material is tough, chemically stable, porous, heat-sensitive, filled, coated or securely mounted. A hard gem can still fracture along cleavage, while a softer material may survive ordinary wear if it is handled gently. Treatments and construction can change the answer again.

This matrix is deliberately conservative. It is more useful than viral “water-safe” charts because it asks what could actually fail: the mineral surface, a treatment, a fracture, the setting, the stringing material or the finish. GIA care guidance similarly emphasizes that light, heat, treatments and cleaning technology can affect different gems in different ways. For an expensive, sentimental or unidentified item, professional gemological or jewellery advice is more appropriate than escalating a home-cleaning experiment.
A simple physical cleaning routine
For many finished crystal objects, the safest first step is dry cleaning. Use a clean microfibre or other soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and loose dust. A soft brush can help around carvings or bead holes, but use very light pressure on soft, flaky, fibrous or delicate surfaces. If the piece is a bracelet, support the strand instead of pulling it taut while wiping each bead.
If the material is known to be stable in brief contact with water, a slightly damp cloth is often enough. For robust untreated gems that are specifically known to tolerate it, mild soap and lukewarm water may be appropriate, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. That is not a universal crystal rule. Gemological care guidance varies by species and treatment: a cleaning method considered safe for one gem may be unsuitable for another because heat, acids, dyes, fillers or fractures change durability.
Do not reach automatically for ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Those devices can be useful for some durable jewellery materials, but they can also worsen fractures, loosen fillings, damage coatings or harm gems with poor heat resistance. A crystal shop item may also include glue, elastic, plated components or mixed stones whose limitations are unknown. When the full construction is not documented, gentle hand cleaning is the lower-risk option.
Which crystals should not be soaked in water?
Internet lists of “water-safe” and “water-unsafe” crystals are often too absolute. Water response depends on mineral chemistry, surface condition, time, temperature and what else is attached to the stone. Some materials are only slightly soluble but can still lose lustre or develop surface changes after repeated soaking; others contain components that oxidise or react more readily. The safest rule is to avoid immersion whenever the identity or treatment is uncertain.
Selenite and other gypsum varieties
Selenite is a variety of gypsum, a very soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of about 2 and pronounced cleavage. Gypsum is more vulnerable to scratching than common quartz and does not benefit from being left in water. Polished selenite can develop a dull or etched-looking surface with repeated moisture exposure, and thin edges can chip easily. Wipe it dry or use an almost-dry cloth when necessary, then dry it immediately. Do not use a selenite plate as a reason to wash several unknown stones together.
Malachite
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, generally around 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale. Its relative softness and sensitivity to acids mean abrasive powders, acidic cleaners and harsh household products are poor choices. Finished malachite may also be stabilised or treated. A soft dry cloth is the safest routine for ordinary dust; if more cleaning is required, follow treatment-specific professional guidance rather than soaking it in salt water or vinegar-based mixtures.
Pyrite
Pyrite is iron sulfide. Although a brief accidental splash is not the same as immediate destruction, prolonged moisture can encourage oxidation, especially around fractures, porous aggregates or material stored damp. Oxidation products can alter the surface and can be accelerated by humid storage. Keep pyrite dry, avoid saltwater cleansing, and never put it away while wet. For bracelets containing pyrite beads, moisture can also shorten the life of elastic and affect metal spacers.
Other soft, porous, layered, dyed, filled or composite materials deserve similar caution. The point is not to memorise a simplistic blacklist; it is to match the cleaning method to the actual material and treatment.
Salt, sunlight, smoke and other popular cleansing methods
Salt and saltwater
Salt is often presented online as a universal spiritual cleanser, but it is physically abrasive and saltwater can be corrosive to metals. Salt can lodge in pits, drill holes and crevices, and repeated contact can be hard on softer or porous surfaces. If salt has symbolic meaning in your practice, keep the crystal physically separate: place it beside a bowl of salt rather than burying it or immersing it. This preserves the ritual without forcing an unnecessary material risk.
Sunlight
Sunlight can be meaningful as a symbolic charging practice, but prolonged direct sun is not ideal for every coloured material. Some gemstones and dyes are light-sensitive and may fade over time. Heat can also affect filled, coated or glued items. If you choose a sunlight ritual, use a brief period of indirect or gentle morning light and avoid leaving valuable or treatment-sensitive pieces on a hot windowsill. Never use a magnifying sphere or clear crystal in a position where it can focus sunlight onto combustible material.
Smoke, incense and herbs
Passing a stone through incense or herbal smoke is a spiritual practice, not a physical sterilisation method. Smoke can leave residue, and burning materials introduce respiratory and fire hazards. Use ventilation, keep embers away from fabric and packaging, and avoid smoke around children, pets or anyone sensitive to it. There is no requirement to burn sage specifically; many people choose scent-free practices such as sound, prayer, breath or simple intention-setting.
Moonlight
Moonlight is one of the lower-contact rituals because the stone does not need to touch water, salt or smoke. From a material-care perspective, the main risks are environmental: dew, rain, theft, falls from a balcony or temperature changes. A windowsill indoors is usually safer than leaving jewellery outdoors overnight. The spiritual meaning of moon phases varies by practice; no phase is scientifically shown to alter a mineral's physical properties.
How to “charge” crystals without making scientific claims
Within modern crystal practice, “charging” usually means intentionally dedicating a stone to a purpose, refreshing a ritual connection or using it as a reminder for a chosen value. That can be done without claiming that the stone stores measurable healing energy. A simple routine is to clean the object physically if needed, sit quietly for a minute, name the intention in plain language and place the stone somewhere that will remind you of the action connected to that intention.
For example, someone who uses amethyst as a symbol of calm might pair it with a practical evening routine such as turning off notifications, writing tomorrow's priorities and taking several slow breaths. Someone who uses pyrite as a symbol of financial discipline might keep it near a budgeting notebook and review spending weekly. The crystal is functioning as a cue within a personal practice, not as a guaranteed mechanism for sleep, wealth, treatment or protection.

Storage: prevent scratches, chips and moisture damage
Hardness describes resistance to scratching, not resistance to breaking. A hard stone can still chip if it has cleavage, fractures or a pointed shape. Store pieces so they are not knocking against one another in a drawer or travel bag. Separate softer stones from harder ones with pouches, compartments or soft cloth. Quartz-family materials can scratch many softer minerals; metal findings can also mark polished surfaces.
Keep storage dry and away from rapid temperature changes. Do not seal a damp piece in a pouch. If you live in a humid climate, allow jewellery to air-dry fully before closing it in a box. Avoid placing heavy stones on top of delicate clusters, carved points or thin plates. Spheres and polished eggs should be placed in stable stands or compartments where they cannot roll off shelves.
For bracelets and malas, lay the strand in a relaxed curve rather than stretching the cord around an object. Avoid hanging heavy stone strands from a single point for long periods, because gravity can stress cord and knots. Keep perfume, hair spray, hand sanitiser and household cleaners away from porous stones, plating and elastic.
Care for bracelets, pendants, towers and raw pieces
Bracelets and elastic jewellery
Roll stretch bracelets over the hand rather than pulling one section far away from the rest. Remove them for swimming, bathing, heavy exercise and cleaning. Sweat and products on the skin can build up around drill holes, so wipe the bracelet after wear and let it dry before storing. If the elastic begins to fray, flatten or stay stretched, restringing is safer than waiting for it to break.
Pendants and metal-mounted stones
A pendant's care is determined by both stone and metal. Water that is harmless to a durable gem may still affect plating, adhesive or a chain. Wipe skin oils after wear, store chains so they do not tangle around softer stones, and follow any specific instructions for sterling silver, gold plating or other components.
Towers, carvings and spheres
Polished shapes often have vulnerable edges or points. Lift a tower from its base, not its tip. Place spheres on secure stands. Do not line up heavy objects on a narrow shelf where vibration can cause a fall. A chip is a mechanical event, not evidence that a crystal “absorbed negativity.” If a damaged piece still feels meaningful and has no sharp unsafe edge, it can continue to be used.
Raw clusters
Raw pieces can shed small grains, dust or fragile crystals. Avoid scrubbing them aggressively. Do not use compressed air at close range on delicate clusters. If the specimen is geologically unusual, valuable or contains unknown secondary minerals, specimen-care advice from a mineral professional is more appropriate than generic crystal-cleaning recipes.
Authenticity and treatment affect care
Care advice is only as good as the identification behind it. Natural, treated, synthetic and imitation materials can look similar but react differently to heat, solvents or abrasion. Dyed porous stones may release colour; fracture-filled stones may be damaged by heat or ultrasonic cleaning; coated surfaces can scratch; glass imitations may be harder or softer than the stone they resemble. That is why disclosure matters for both value and maintenance.
Ask for the material name, whether treatment is known or expected, and what components are used in jewellery. A trustworthy description should not imply that every inclusion proves a stone is natural or that every uniform bead must be fake. If identity genuinely matters, laboratory methods are more reliable than viral home tests. Common care mistakes
- Soaking everything together: a mixed bowl can include stones, metals, elastic, dyes and fillers with completely different tolerances.

- Leaving stones in direct sun all day: some colours and treatments are light- or heat-sensitive, and clear objects can concentrate sunlight.
- Assuming hardness means indestructible: Mohs hardness measures scratch resistance; toughness and cleavage are separate properties.
- Using vinegar, bleach or strong cleaners: acids and oxidising chemicals can attack minerals, metals, dyes and coatings.
- Believing a broken crystal has failed spiritually: chips are usually explained by impact, internal fractures, thermal stress or wear.
- Following one cleansing rule for every stone: practical care must be material-specific, while spiritual rituals are optional.
Travel and long-term maintenance
Travel adds risks that ordinary shelf storage does not. Pack individual stones so hard pieces cannot rub against softer ones, and keep pointed towers or carvings away from pressure at the edge of a suitcase. Do not put a loose crystal sphere in a bag where it can roll into electronics, glass containers or other jewellery. For valuable or sentimentally important pieces, a small padded box is more protective than a thin drawstring pouch.
Temperature matters as well. Avoid leaving crystals and jewellery in a parked car where heat can build quickly, especially when the piece includes glue, resin, elastic, coatings or fluid-filled inclusions. After a humid trip, unpack the pieces and let them dry in normal indoor conditions before storing them for a long period.
Inspect frequently worn jewellery every few months. Look for stretched elastic, loose knots, bent findings, surface coating wear, chips around drill holes and sharp edges. Maintenance is easier before a weak cord breaks. If a stone has become dull, resist the urge to polish it with toothpaste, baking soda or metal polish; these can be abrasive or chemically unsuitable.
