Type A, B and C jadeite language needs context

In common jadeite trade usage, Type A generally refers to natural jadeite that has not undergone polymer impregnation or dyeing, apart from traditional surface waxing; Type B refers to material that has been bleached and polymer-impregnated; Type C refers to dyed jadeite, and combinations can occur. These categories are about treatment, not whether the underlying material started as jadeite.

Treatment can dramatically affect value and long-term care. Polymer impregnation may not be visible to a beginner, and subtle dye can escape casual inspection. With jade, a beautiful green is not enough information. The material could be jadeite, nephrite, another green mineral, dyed stone or glass; even genuine jadeite can fall into treatment categories with very different value implications. That makes disclosure and laboratory scope unusually important compared with many low-cost quartz products.

For an inexpensive decorative piece, you may only need confidence that it is accurately described and suitable for its use. For a high-value jadeite purchase, require evidence proportionate to claims of untreated material, premium color or origin. Do not let folklore tests carry a decision that deserves professional gemology.

One final warning about jade pricing

Jade value can vary enormously with material type, color, translucency, texture, craftsmanship and treatment. A low price does not prove imitation, and a high price does not prove untreated jadeite. When a premium is justified by Type A, exceptional color or origin language, insist on evidence that addresses that specific premium rather than relying on seller reputation alone.
